🌐 About the Role

The Senior Scientist – Responsible AI & Research Integration is a hybrid role situated at the intersection of advanced AI research, strategic governance, and enterprise product integration. Split across Cognizant’s Responsible AI Office and AI Research Lab, the role is crafted for experienced professionals who excel at translating high-impact academic research into scalable, ethical, and robust AI systems. It’s ideal for someone with a strong academic background in AI safety and governance and a track record of influencing product strategy and ecosystem engagement.

This role consists of:

60% dedicated to research on AI safety, agentic behavior, system interoperability, and ethical oversight mechanisms.
40% focused on integrating research outputs into enterprise systems, product features, governance tools, and strategic frameworks.

🧠 Key Responsibilities

1. Research & Development (60%)

Lead pioneering research in Responsible AI, including model alignment, agentic behavior, transparency, and multi-agent oversight mechanisms.
Develop applied research agendas aligned with enterprise needs and long-term academic inquiry.
Translate complex research findings into production-ready tools, evaluation metrics, or AI governance mechanisms.
Prototype and validate safety-focused tools to mitigate AI risks and enhance decision-making reliability.

2. Product Strategy & Market Intelligence (25%)

Define roadmap specifications rooted in research insights and market trends.
Evaluate early-stage startups developing AI safety, interpretability, and risk governance tools.
Conduct technical due diligence and assess commercial potential of responsible AI solutions.
Bridge research and engineering teams by aligning innovations with product viability and deployment objectives.
Monitor market gaps in AI safety tools and identify integration opportunities for existing or new products.

3. Ecosystem Development & Strategic Partnerships (15%)

Forge alliances with global academic institutions such as Stanford HAI, MIT CSAIL, UC Berkeley CHAI, and Oxford.
Explore collaborative projects, joint research publications, shared benchmarks, and strategic knowledge exchange.
Identify promising AI startups, scale-ups, or technologies for potential investment, acquisition, or partnerships.
Engage with venture capital communities and accelerator programs focused on AI governance and trust technologies.

🗣 Thought Leadership & Representation

As a public-facing figure and internal knowledge champion, you will:

Represent Cognizant in AI safety conferences, research summits, and policy dialogues.
Participate in the development of industry standards and actively engage with working groups focused on Responsible AI practices and evaluation frameworks.
Facilitate internal training sessions and collaborative knowledge exchanges aimed at strengthening the organization’s approach to AI safety and risk management.
Guide teams on navigating emerging compliance requirements and AI risk scenarios.

📚 Required Qualifications

Technical & Research Expertise:

Ph.D. in Computer Science, AI, Machine Learning, Cognitive Systems, or a related discipline.
Demonstrated expertise in AI safety, agent alignment, fairness, explainability, and risk-aware architectures.
A strong publication history or equivalent contributions in top-tier AI conferences (e.g., NeurIPS, ICML, FAccT, AIES).
Deep experience with ML evaluation pipelines, AI lifecycle governance, and multi-agent system design.
Proficiency in building, testing, and integrating AI safety tools and controls into real-world platforms.
In-depth knowledge of evolving regulatory landscapes such as the EU AI Act, along with expertise in AI compliance standards and governance frameworks.

Strategic Insight & Ecosystem Experience:

Experience evaluating or investing in early-stage AI startups, especially in the AI safety domain.
In-depth knowledge of venture capital dynamics, industry-academia collaborations, and AI policy forums.
Ability to navigate the AI startup ecosystem and identify promising partners, researchers, or technologies.
Familiarity with enterprise AI risk management practices, especially in regulated industries.

Communication & Stakeholder Management:

Comfort working across interdisciplinary teams, including research, product, policy, and executive leadership.
Proven track record in aligning strategic goals with scientific innovation.
Skilled at translating complex academic research into practical product strategies and impactful business insights.
Skilled at managing complex, multi-stakeholder discussions around AI safety, ethics, and governance.

✅ Preferred Qualifications

Active involvement in AI safety or Responsible AI policy communities.
Prior experience working with government regulators, academic consortia, or international standards bodies.
Exposure to AI compliance, including ethical audits, algorithmic transparency, and incident reporting mechanisms.
Entrepreneurial background or prior involvement with AI startups or investment networks.
Public speaking experience at high-profile AI, ML, or safety conferences.
