Lead Structural Design Engineer – Power Supply Systems & Infrastructure Projects

Position Title: Lead Structural Design Engineer
Department: Design & Engineering
Posting Location: [To be specified]
Minimum Qualification: Post Graduate Certificate (PGC) in Structural Engineering or a related discipline

Position Overview

We are actively seeking an experienced and highly skilled Lead Structural Design Engineer to spearhead the design and engineering efforts related to tower structures and power supply system infrastructure. This role demands a professional with a deep understanding of structural systems, foundational engineering principles, and experience working on large-scale traction, transmission, and communication projects.

The successful candidate will be responsible for developing, reviewing, and guiding the structural design of critical infrastructure such as transformer foundations, switchgear structures, and control building supports. This includes structural integrity checks, code compliance, coordination across disciplines, and providing on-site technical support. The role also involves leading a team of engineers and contributing to both the technical and strategic goals of the organization.

Key Responsibilities

1. Structural Design Leadership

  • Lead and manage the structural design of traction towers, transmission towers, and communication masts.
  • Oversee the design of power supply system infrastructure including transformer foundations, switchgear platforms, and structural supports for control buildings.
  • Ensure all structural designs are accurate, safe, and compliant with project specifications and international/national codes.

2. Drawing Review and Approval

  • Review and approve general arrangement (GA) drawings, reinforcement detailing, and fabrication/shop drawings.
  • Provide technical oversight to ensure drawing accuracy and alignment with structural calculations and design intent.

3. Structural Analysis and Software Application

  • Perform detailed structural analysis using tools such as STAAD Pro, ETABS, or other FEA software.
  • Evaluate load conditions including dead loads, live loads, wind loads, and seismic forces to ensure structural resilience.
  • Conduct design validation and simulations to predict real-world performance of structures.

4. Cross-functional Coordination

  • Collaborate with electrical, civil, and architectural engineering teams to produce integrated design solutions.
  • Ensure multi-disciplinary coordination throughout the design phase for seamless project execution.

5. Geotechnical Integration

  • Oversee and interpret geotechnical investigation reports.
  • Integrate soil bearing data, strata conditions, and environmental considerations into foundational design strategies.

6. Compliance and Standards Adherence

  • Ensure design solutions adhere to international and local standards such as IS, Eurocode, ASTM, or other applicable codes.
  • Incorporate client-specific technical requirements and statutory regulations into all design stages.

7. Value Engineering and Optimization

  • Apply principles of value engineering to optimize material usage, enhance constructability, and reduce project costs without compromising safety or quality.
  • Innovate on structural layout and member sizing to improve efficiency and lifecycle durability.

8. Team Supervision and Technical Review

  • Lead and mentor a team of structural engineers by assigning tasks, reviewing deliverables, and ensuring technical quality.
  • Encourage collaborative learning and upskilling through training sessions and performance reviews.

9. Site Support and Technical Advisory

  • Provide remote and on-site technical support during the construction phase.
  • Respond to site queries, conduct structural inspections, and resolve construction-related issues.

10. Documentation and Tender Support

  • Prepare and review technical documents required for tender submissions and project execution.
  • Assist in the development of BOQs, technical specifications, and design narratives.

Required Skills and Qualifications

Academic Background:

  • Post Graduate Certificate (PGC) or Master’s degree in Structural Engineering or Civil Engineering with a focus on structural design.

Professional Experience:

  • 8–15 years of experience in structural engineering roles, with significant exposure to transmission and infrastructure design.
  • Proven track record of leading complex infrastructure design projects from concept through execution.

Technical Proficiency:

  • Proficient in structural analysis tools: STAAD Pro, ETABS, SAP2000, etc.
  • Skilled in AutoCAD, Revit, and structural drafting tools.
  • Familiar with design standards: IS codes, Eurocodes, ASTM, BS, or ACI.

Project Exposure:

  • Experience in designing for railway electrification, communication towers, utility infrastructure, and high-voltage substations.
  • Familiarity with steel and concrete design methodologies, including pre-stressed and reinforced concrete.

Behavioral Competencies:

  • Strong leadership and mentoring capabilities.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and engineering judgment.
  • Effective communication and documentation abilities.
  • Ability to manage deadlines, stakeholders, and multi-disciplinary teams.

Key Deliverables

  • Structural design reports and calculations
  • Approved GA drawings and fabrication details
  • Coordinated multi-discipline design packages
  • Technical responses to tenders and RFPs
  • Site visit reports and structural clearance memos
