This role demands hands-on design, simulation, validation, and the ability to troubleshoot and optimize high-performance power electronics systems.

Key Responsibilities

Power Electronics System Design

  • Design and develop advanced power conversion systems including both isolated and non-isolated DC-DC converters.
  • Select and appropriately size power components such as IGBTs, MOSFETs, SiC and GaN semiconductors, magnetics, capacitors, and protection devices.
  • Prepare detailed design documentation including system architecture, schematics, bills of materials (BOM), and engineering calculation reports.
  • Ensure thermal management and mechanical layout support high reliability and efficiency.

Simulation and Modelling

  • Perform circuit-level simulation and system modelling using MATLAB/Simulink and other simulation tools.
  • Analyse switching behavior, switching losses, harmonic content, thermal characteristics, and overall system efficiency.
  • Conduct EMI/EMC simulations and implement mitigation strategies in compliance with standards.
  • Interpret Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) results to inform thermal design improvements.

Control Strategy & Firmware Integration

  • Collaborate with firmware teams to implement digital control algorithms such as Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT), fault detection, and grid support functionalities.
  • Validate the system’s dynamic response under various operating scenarios including load transients, grid variations, and thermal cycling.
  • Provide feedback to firmware developers on real-time performance for system optimization.

Prototyping and Testing

  • Lead the prototyping phase by assembling test benches and executing functional, thermal, endurance, and reliability testing protocols.
  • Conduct root cause analysis (RCA) for design anomalies or field failures and implement improvements.
  • Use oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, power analyzers, and thermal cameras for diagnostics and performance validation.

Compliance and Certification

  • Ensure designs meet international and regional standards such as IEC, UL, IEEE, and BIS.
  • Prepare documentation required for product certification, working closely with regulatory bodies.
  • Implement best practices for design safety, thermal performance, and electromagnetic compatibility.

Required Skills and Competencies

  • Power Electronics Expertise: Strong fundamentals in analog and digital power electronics, including switch-mode power supplies, high-frequency transformers, and magnetics.
  • Control Systems Knowledge: Solid understanding of control strategies for power converters and grid-tied systems.
  • Hands-on Proficiency: Proven ability in using oscilloscopes, power meters, spectrum analyzers, and lab-based test tools.
  • Thermal & EMI/EMC: Experience with thermal design techniques and EMI/EMC filtering and shielding for high-frequency converters.
  • Design for Reliability: Knowledge of failure modes, safety margins, protection circuits, and endurance testing.
  • Grid Compliance: Familiarity with grid codes such as IEEE 519, IEC 61000, IEC 62477, and their application in system design.

Educational Background

  • B.E./B.Tech or M.E./M.Tech in Electrical Engineering, Power Electronics, or a related field.
  • Additional certifications in design for safety, compliance testing, or thermal management are advantageous.

Preferred Tools and Platforms

  • MATLAB/Simulink for system-level simulations
  • PLECS or LTspice for circuit simulations
  • Altium Designer or OrCAD for schematic and PCB design
  • ANSYS Icepak or equivalent for thermal simulations
  • Microsoft Office for documentation and reporting
